Hi I’m James Walker

Clarence (Southern Tasmania’s biggest council)  is a diverse community. The municipal area is made up of suburbs, seaside shacks, historic villages, vineyards, farms and so much more. Where else in the world can you go for a swim right outside an international cricket ground during the lunch break?

I’M AGAINST

Merging Clarence: Clarence ratepayers face the threat of mergers. Twenty nine councils across Tasmania is too many, however subsuming Clarence into a CBD centric single southern Tasmanian Council is not the way to go. Just like Southern Water, Eastern Shore ratepayers will suffer under higher bills and decreased accountability.  My Submission on this matter can seen by clicking on the council amalgamation tab.

Parking Meters in Clarence: In September I raised concerns about this issue along with Hans Willink in the Mercury. Council hastily issued a press release stating that there won’t be parking meters and largely adopted my suggestions to better enforce current time limits. However this issue has not gone away. Council noted (without comment) the report that included the suggestion to implement Eastern Shore Parking Meters. Despite what you might read by some candidates in the ballot paper information sheets this matter is not over rather it has just sneakily been deferred.

If elected as an Alderman I will always promote initiatives, large or small, that can improve the quality of life for residents.

I’M FOR:

  • A Clarence Abilities Playground (any parent who has been to the Dru Point facility in Margate can tell you what we are missing)
  • Sustainable value adding development.
  • A Flagstaff Gully Bypass
  • Smart Initiatives to boost Tourism and associated jobs (Such as smart phone app for Wineries in our Coal River Valley).
  • Green Waste Wheelie Bins
  • Incentives to attract niche services / businesses to Clarence
